Now that we’ve spent three quarters of a year with our long-term ’17 Nissan Titan, we have a hard time not preaching its gospel whenever we’re asked. The truck won our 2017 Pickup Truck of the Year test and has happily defended its title thus far. Complaints are few and far between. In fact, we have so little to gripe about that people often question our honesty.
To further beat the dead horse, fuel economy, or lack thereof, has been our most nagging issue. This period, we managed a highway tank of 18.55 mpg. While our best thus far, it’s still short of the EPA’s rating. We’ve got one more quarter to try and get it a bit closer, but our hopes aren’t high.
While we haven’t had any issues with the truck, we did need to have a recall fixed during this report period. Upon checking in at the local dealer’s service department for our required 10,000-mile service, we were informed that there was an open recall on the truck that would require an ECM and TCM reflash. We gave the OK and picked the truck back up later that afternoon (the reflash required more than four hours to complete). Previously, we noticed a little stutter from the transmission, but it wasn’t incredibly obvious and felt more like a foot slipping on the accelerator pedal instead of a transmission issue. Because of this, along with how infrequently it occurred and our inability to replicate it, we never addressed the issue with the dealer. After the reflash, however, the shudder was eliminated completely and the transmission felt like it was more eager to downshift when requested for passing and the like. So while we weren’t experiencing any issues per se, the recall did improve driveability somewhat. We also learned during this service visit that for the ’18 model year Nissan increased the recommended service interval from 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

We spent less time with a trailer in tow this period than pervious and more time cruising the open roads. What these long stretches gave us was a great appreciation for just how well appointed the cabin of the Titan is. Our tester is a Platinum Reserve trim, but even lower-grade models are treated much the same. The Rockford Fosgate stereo flat cranks. Turn the knob to the right and it gets loud while staying very crisp and clear. And the bass thumps hard—so hard that we actually had to drop it instead of increasing it as we do with most vehicles. We would love it if Nissan would add Apple CarPlay compatibility in the future, but for now we don’t miss what we don’t have.
The center console is useful at corralling our junk, with both compartments proving quite cavernous. The front cupholders can be moved or removed as desired, which we have never found a reason to actually do, aside from digging for lost items beneath them. We still dislike the knobs for the seat heating and cooling, and the shelf where they’re located loves to collect dust. Speaking of dust, the piano-black accent around the infotainment screen is another bane of our existence because it’s impossible to keep clean.

The rear seat is a virtual Swiss Army Knife of versatility. Flipped down, the rear bench can seat three people (or two with the armrest lowered). Flip the seats up and a locking storage bin is revealed. The lock is plastic, so it’s really only there to keep honest people honest or little fingers out. Dividers are present to adjust storage as needed, and a notch is provided to hide longer items. With the lids down, a shelf folds out from the top, providing a flat load surface all the way across. Hooks are provided on the seat bottoms to keep bagged goods from rolling around. The seatbacks also fold down—for what purpose, we’re still not certain.
