This Lotus Esprit was built in October 1977 as #409 of 544 S1 cars produced for the North American market. The car is reportedly #83 of 92 examples finished in Carnival Red and features a factory green interior with tartan inserts as well as a carbureted 2.0L inline-four, which is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It reportedly remained with its original owner until the mid 1980s, was put into longterm storage by the second owner, and was purchased by the current third owner a few years ago. This Esprit S1 has been driven sparingly since being recommissioned and the odometer indicates just over 18k miles. It is offered on behalf of its current owner with nearly 200 pictures and a clean California title.
Carnival Red paint is shown in detail in over 80 exterior pictures provided in the gallery below. The seller notes the presence of a “523H” nose marker, and body panel numbers are described as within normal ranges for original parts. The hood may have been repainted in the past according to the seller, and shows minor flaws.
The pop-up headlamps were recently adjusted and are shown both raised and lowered in photos. The car sits on correct polished 14″ Wolfrace wheels, which will be mounted with a new set of tires for the next owner. The OEM tool kit and spare wheel are pictured in the gallery. The driver’s mirror sags occasionally while driving per the seller.
This Esprit features green upholstery with tartan inserts, corresponding carpets, and green trim on the dashboard and center console. The grey “mouse hair” instrument binnacle has faded with time and now appears green in certain lighting per the seller. The seller states that the front fan, cabin blower fan, dash and dome lights, turn signals, and power windows are functional. The speedometer works only sporadically, though the odometer is said to remain operational and currently indicates just over 18k miles. Previous records are unavailable to confirm mileage.
The mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated 2.0L four is equipped with Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels through a factory 5-speed manual gearbox. The stock smog pump and pulley were removed by a prior owner, and the seller states the car will be emissions tested if it is to stay in California. A rebuilt fuel pump and new carburetor gaskets were fitted during the most recent service, and the clutch fluid and engine oil/filter were changed. The engine cover straps are missing per the seller, as are the side panels meant to cover the gaps between the wheel wells and firewall.
The seller states that this Esprit will leave some drops of oil. A few stone chips and areas of oxidization are present on the undercarriage, an additional 15+ pictures of which are included in the gallery.
