BMW teases X7 ahead of debut this month

BMW has released a teaser shot of its new X7 ahead of the model’s debut later this month.

The blurry shot, posted on the company’s official Facebook page, details nothing other than that BMW’s traditional kidney grille and slick headlights are a key part of the front end design, and that the finish product is ‘coming soon.’

As BMW’s teaser campaign gets under way though, and given the prominent ‘Taking luxury to a higher level’ tagline, it would be foolish to consider the first-ever X7 ‘just’ an X5 with an extended wheelbase.

Indeed, alongside the resurrected 8 Series Coupe, the soon-to-be flagship SUV is an integral part of BMW’s plans to move further upmarket and reach out to a new clientele, specifically those already eying a top-drawer Range Rover or Mercedes-Benz GLS. Expect few corners to be left unturned in this approach.

At the base of the X7 for example is BMW’s new CLAR (Cluster Architecture), a more flexible platform formed of aluminum and high-strength steel that’s set to underpin a multitude of the company’s rear-wheel-drive models. Bimmer’s head honchos, as you’d expect, are keeping pretty mum about design details, though speculation suggests the final production model won’t be too far removed from the Concept X7 iPerformance BMW unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Engine-wise, the X7 is expected to offer the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder and 4.4-litre V8 options already powering the X5, the latter of which is also expected to feature in the range-topping ‘M’ model set to arrive in late 2019. Similarly intriguing is the mooted hybrid example that could mate a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor, though again, official confirmation has yet to be given.
