Ford Australia releases images of new Mustang Supercar

Ford Australia has revealed images of the race-spec Mustang that will make its Supercars Championship debut next year down under.

The upcoming ‘strenuous testing program’ of the new Mustang Supercar prototype was conducted by DJR Team Penske, the longest running team in what was once called V8 Supercars.

Having made its debut in 1980, the team already has seven Drivers’ championships to its name, five of which were won by team founder (“DJR” himself) Dick Johnson. The Gold Coast-based outfit also won the 2017 Teams’ championship.

Initial tests of the V8-powered bruiser – a collaborative effort between Ford Performance, Ford Australia and the Ford Asia-Pacific Design Studio – were apparently run “faultlessly” at the Willowbank Circuit in Queensland.

Current standings leader Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard, second cousin of 13-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner David, were on driver detail throughout the tests, although Tickford Racing, who will also enter at least three Ford Mustangs next season, will also be part of the car’s homologation development program.

23RedRacing is also set to enter a single Mustang for two-time Bathurst winner, Will Davison.

It’s still early days with regards to technical details, but expect the first coupe to start a V8 Supercars race in nearly two decades to cause quite a stir on its competitive debut in Adelaide on the 2nd and 3rd of March.

The muscle car legend is set to replace the long-tenured Ford Falcon, which has raced in Australia’s premier touring car series in various guises since 1970 and will complete its final season this year. An impressive competitive history for the Falcon draws to a close with 15 Drivers’ Championships under its hood scoop, alongside 14 of Ford’s 19 wins at the series’ flagship Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama.
