This 1955 Chrysler C-300 was purchased new from Mason Chrysler-Plymouth in Royal Oak, Michigan by a Mr. Charles Hannigan and remained in his possession until 1968. It was subsequently acquired by the current owner’s parents, and ultimately by the current owner in 1998. Finished in Tango Red over a natural leather interior, the car is powered by a 331ci FirePower Hemi V8 that was rebuilt in 2008 and is backed by a 2-speed PowerFlite automatic transmission. The only noted modification is a dual exhaust system added when the engine was rebuilt, and the car retains factory instrumentation, radio, and wheel covers. Documentation back to the original purchase includes mail from the original owner regarding service and care for the car. This C-300 is now offered by the selling dealer on behalf of the current owner with a clean Michigan title.
1,725 C-300 coupes were sold in 1955 at a cost of slightly more than $4k each, making the the C-300 the second most expensive car in Chrysler’s lineup after the Town & Country station wagon. The exterior on this example is finished in Tango Red, and the steel wheels wear factory covers and wide whitewall tires.
The car retains factory trim, including side strikes, Chrysler script on the rear quarter panels, and a split front grille. Flaking is visible in the finish aft of the rear wheels.
C-300s were equipped with Natural cow hide leather upholstery and shared the Imperial’s two-tone dash. The front bench features a split backrest for access to the rear seat, and detailed photos are provided of the leather upholstery and interior panels. The PowerFlite automatic transmission is controlled by a dash-mounted selector, and photos are provided of the factory switchgear.
Per the seller the factory gauges and clock are functional. Instrumentation is housed in the black dash fascia panel and includes a 150-mph speedometer and a combination gauge for the fuel level, oil pressure, amperage, and coolant temperature. 35k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer.
The 331ci FirePower V8 is equipped with dual 4-barrel carburetors and a factory airbox assembly. It was rated at 300 horsepower when new, which is sent to the rear wheels via a 2-speed PowerFlite automatic transmission. The car was originally advertised as being capable of a 16.9 second sprint to 90 mph and a top speed of 130 mph. The seller reports that the engine was rebuilt in 2008.
The current owners had a dual exhaust system installed when the engine was rebuilt. The car is equipped with 4-wheel drum brakes, independent front suspension, and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and coilover helper springs.
